The current research had three shortages. First, psychology didn’t have clearly recognize about the construct of humour. Second, lack the sense of humour measurement tool for children. Third, the empirical research relatively weak, especially the relationship between the humour and social adaptation. For compensating the defects, improving the existing system, our study through literature review and open-ended interviews investigated the construction of humour, children’s sense of humour questionnaire formed on this basis. Using the sense of humour questionnaire by ourselves, self-esteem scale and social anxiety scale to explore elementary school students. The results were as follows:1. Humour of Chinese children was a multi-dimensional structure. The general humour included humour perceive, humour recognition, humour imitate and humour creation.2. Sense of Humour Scale had good qualities of psychometrics in inner consistency reliability, split-half reliability, content validity, criterion validity. The date of humour questionnaire could be regarded as an appropriate tool for estimating humour of Chinese children.3. The total score of humour were statistically significant different between gender and grade. The Self-esteem’s score were significant different among grade, living places and parent’s educational level. Except father’s educational level, the social anxiety’s score differences of other four population variables were all significant.4. Elementary school high-grade students’ self-esteem, humour and social anxiety related to each other in significant. Humour, especially humour perceive could predicate social anxiety. Self-esteem partially mediated the relationship between general humour and social anxiety.In short, the level of children’s humour need to be improved, this variable and self-esteem play an import role in reducing the social anxiety and distress, promoting social adaptation.
