People recognize inverted face worse than upright face,even worse than other inverted subjects,which is called face inversion effect. The popular thought belives that people use configural mechanism to recognize upright faces, while the face is inverted, feature mechanism becomes the main cognitive way. Quantitative theory supporters think face inversion effect has the same influnce on both configural and feature cognition process, therefore a linear relationship exists between performs and oriented angles. It fits spin theory that people needs to extract information to normalize inverted faces. As these angles deviate more from upright position, the harder to recognize. So configural and feature mechanism in face recognition process are quantitative.While others think they are qualitative, for face inversion affects configural performs more than feature.The opposite position of oriented face recognition whether is linear or non-linear related to angles, which may be caused by methodology, or the inaccurate subsection. During face orientation, early studies only judge angles and performs from0°-180°, which causing both linear and non-linear relationship exist. We think the performs and oriented angles should be segment into three sections, and it changes form linear to non-linear and finally into linear trend. During the first stage, inversion effect has great difference between configural mechanism processed angles. The results linear descend accrding to spin theory. In the second stage, inversion effect has little difference between feature mechanism processed angles, so recognition results change a little. In the last stage, while angles gradually recover to upright position, configural mechanism becomes the main recognition way again, then the results linear ascend. This transformation not only combines both quantitative and qualitative theory and it’s suitable for most kinds of face performs.Face has strong sociality,especially its emotion speciality. People can recognize the age, gender and other information through other’s faces. They can also sense the emotion before a face. Face expression is the outcoming of emotion, which express through muscles around eye. face and mouse. Many studies find that face and expression recogniton have multiple coincide brain regions, and also the same finding in behavior researches. They conclude that facial expression can effect face recognition. In order to study whether emotion will affect face inversion effect, causing a difference between neutral and emotional faces recognition, and also to find out recognition results of rotated faces will goes in a segment way. In this study, we observe that emotion affect the recognition results caused by inversion effect both in behavior and ERP evidence through three experiments. We also get a tentative exploration on its inner cognitive neuron basis.On previous experiment, we use foreign face rotation produce to testify whether it is suitable for Chinese people with Chinese face pictures. We select10pictures from CFAPS and spin every picture into12angles. Obsevers will first see a target picture and later a probe picture, then they need to press F or J key according to whether this two presented pictures are the same or not. Through a few observers’results, we obtain a significant main effect of degree and also a periodic change. It reaches our expection.In the behavioral experiment, we use view recgniton matching task and add a goup of fearful face pictures as new materials. To ensure the emotional stability during experiment, the experiment is divided into two parts that one including only neutral pictures and the other one are fearful ones. Each participant will accomplish the two parts and their finising succession is balanced. Comparing the results of fearful faces with neutral faces in ANOVA, the behavioral results tells us that individual’s fearful faces recognition result is better than neutral one. The former has shorter reaction time and lower mistake percent. It indicates that inversion effect of rotated fear faces is less than neutral ones. Meanwhile, the fearful face recognition result changes in a periodic way just as the neutral face.Experiment two employs ERP to technical visit early elements of electroencephalography with its sensitive time discrimination technique. It turns out that the fearful and neutral face signal have separated during the stage of PI. While this difference doesn’t appear the same results of behavioral until it lasts to the time window of face sensitive element-N170. Then the ERP evidence confirms that fear is perceived during the early time window and it affects inversion effect’s work on recognition results of rotated fearful faces. Periodic change has also been certified on the ERP study.Above all. this study proves that fearful faces has less inversion effect, and also provides the evidence that recognition of rotated faces presents a periodic changing way both in behavior and neural experments.This study has significant meaning in theory:(1) providing a new way for a deeper exploration of recognizing facial inversion effect.deepen our undersdaing of FIE:(2) combining both quantitative and qualitative opinions, and overcoming their constrasting situation, meanwhile it also proves that this segmentation is feasible for both neural and fearful faces.
