| Childbirth is not only the physiological process of human, but also the phenomenon ofculture and society. Under the special cultural background, childbirth is endowed with the culturaland social connotation, reflecting the cultural characteristics by observing the manners ofchildbirth. In Ancient Greece, women’s key role was childbirth. Thus childbirth research isimportant to understand the position of women in ancient Greece.There are three parts in this paper. The first part describes the condition of childbirthincluding conceive, pregnancy and birth in ancient Greece. The second part introduces the godsand goddesses, sanctuaries, rituals about childbirth. The third part talks about the status and effectsof men and women in Greece by analyzing the medical texts and practices.Under the influence of ancient Greek tradition, female image was lack of self-control. In thepatriarchal society, men hoped to control women who were dominated in family. The greatestfunction of women was breeding offsprings. |
