Objectives:This thesis aims to systematically analyse and summarise the research of aconite by examining the histories of its name, place of produce, processing, efficacy, clinical indications and toxicity. Furthermore, this thesis explores the application of aconite in classical formulae as well as assessing its rules of formula compatibility in the clinical setting. Additionally, this thesis examines ancient and modern medical applications of aconite and its pharmaceutical, formulae usage experience and the theory of formula compatibility. For further research of aconite in the area of disease control and prevention, methodological references are provided. Moreover, the basis for broadening the rational concept of using aconite suitably in a clinical setting is presented. Methods:By using philological research methods and based on ancient herbal literature and the Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China. By detailed reviews, aconite’s origin, processing, pharmacological, clinical, toxicity and detoxification are also discussed. Using historical evolution as basis, research of aconite’s taste characteristics, meridian entered, efficacy and indicative rules are carried out. Classical recipes for the cross-study of aconite’s formula compatibility rules are utilized.35prescriptions containing formulae with aconite were filtered out from Jin Kui Yao Lue and Shang Han Lun,8in Prescriptions of Chinese Materia Medica and70other historical prescriptions. Further applying the compatibility of seven emotions, exploration of the aconite formulae compatibility laws is investigated.Results:1. Characteristics of aconite:heaty, spicy, toxic, enters the channels of kidney and spleen.2. Aconite has the effect of stimulating the Yang energy; supporting Yang and suppressing Yin, transporting medicine into the channels, dilating stagnant vessels and returning heat to the kidneys. Main indications are cold limbs due to excess Yin and deficient Yang, wind-cold-dampness pain syndrome and abdominal mass accumulations etc.3. Aconite is widely applied in classical formulae,20of which documents aconite usage in Shang Han Lun, in which the role of aconite is well documented in encouraging and assisting Yang as well as elimination of evils, smoothing paralysis, dampness, diuretic, suppressing roundworm, sweating etc. In Jin Kui Yao Lue,15formulae documents aconite playing a role in warning Yang to stop bleeding, increase diuretics, smoothing paralysis and dispelling cold to relief the pain effects amongst others.Within70other historical prescriptions, aconite brings the effects of amongst others, boosting Yang, supporting Yuan Yang, warming channels to dissipate cold. These effects thus achieves dehumidification and smoothening of paralysis, pain killing by cold dissipation, strengthening Yang and haemostasis. It farther threats external wounds and heals fractures, ulcer scrofulous, convulsions in children, in fertility, malaria and stroke.4. The preliminary studies of aconite’s formula compatibility rules indicate as mutual reinforcement need and association with Liquorice, Rhizoma Zingiberis, Ramulus Cinnamomi, Fructus Jujubae, White Atractylodes Rhizome, Radix Ginseng, Radix Paeoniae Rubra, Herba Ephedrae, Poria, Herba Asari, Radix Et Rhizoma Rhei, Rhizoma Coptidis, and Radix Scutellariae. With Liquorice and Radix Saposhnikoviae indicate as mutual neutralisation. With Rhizoma Pinelliae, Fructus Trichosanthis, Bulbus Fritillariae, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae and Radix Ampelopsis indicate as mutual opposition. Conclusion:Aconite is widely used in the clinical setting, involving not only internal medicine sugery, but also gynaecology and also the paediatric departments. It possesses the effects of Fang-boosting, distress-relief, thus justifying its long-lasting popularity in applications. Typical characteristics are heaty, spicy, toxic, enters the channels of kidney and spleen. Typical efficacies are Yang energy stimulation, supporting Yang and suppressing Yin, transporting medicine into the channels, dilating stagnant vessels and returning heat to the kidneys. Typical indications are cold limbs due to excess Yin and deficient Yang, wind-cold-dampness pain syndrome and abdominal mass accumulations etc. Thus through the concept of mutual reinforcement need, mutual neutralisation and mutual opposition, the efficacy of formula compatibility is increased, indication towards attenuation is expanded, toxins are prevented.
