| 21century is an international era of knowledge economy, English as an international languageplays an important role in social development. English talents play a more important role in theinternational competition, especially the inter-disciplinary English talents.. For the cultivation ofinter-disciplinary talents, the English major undergraduate education in provincial normaluniversity will be faced with tremendous opportunities and challenges. In order to reply thechallenges, in our country, the ministry of education authorized and issued the new nationalEnglish teaching syllabus for English major (syllabus hereafter) in April,2000, which give adetailed description about the cultivation objectives and the course design requirement for Englishmajor. However, the syllabus is geared to the needs of all our colleges and universities, there is nodefinite standards towards normal universities and colleges, especially the provincial normalcolleges and universities. Thus, as educators, we are conscripted to attach importance to Englishmajor undergraduate education of provincial normal universities. Now the quantity of Englishmajor graduates of provincial normal universities has outdistanced that of national universities andnormal universities, but their scale and quality far behind. Therefore, in order to achieve thepromotion and leap in scale and quality of English major teaching in provincial normaluniversities, content the needs of inter-disciplinary talents in21century, English major courseoffering of provincial normal universities must be further perfect.This paper study the course offering of provincial normal universities by using four methodswhich are document analysis method, questionnaire survey, method of comparative analysis andinterview. The thesis which contrapose the challenges that are presented by the needs ofinter-disciplinary talents towards English major course offering of provincial normal universitiesbegins the research from the characteristics of provincial normal universities, so as to, in the newera, seek the effective methods to cultivate inter-disciplinary talents. This thesis researches thecurrent situations and problems of English major course offering and arrangement in provincialnormal university with various research methods and the detailed analysis of the study results andposes corresponding countermeasures. This study is aimed on the one hand to provide scientificinformation for provincial normal university to develop English major, and on the other hand toshed some light on the course offering and arrangement in English major construction. And it willhave certain significance for provincial normal university to cultivate inter-disciplinary Englishtalent. |
