Gershwin, a composer born and raised in America, has spent his entire lifepursuing the goal of creating American styles of music. His Jazz style of rhythmwhich earns its name as Gershwin style is everlasting and many people nowadays stillsing it. His works“Rhapsody in Blue”which was composed for the performancethat was held by Paul Whiteman achieved great success. This works contributedgreatly to the enlistment of such“unpopular”pop music as American Jazz and Bluesin professional music. His affection for American music can be perceived obviouslyin any of his works. Although Gershwin has created a variety of works in his entirelife, prelude is a single style that he has created specially for piano music. Thesepreludes were created when his personal style had become completely mature. Hecreated six preludes at the beginning and in 1926 performed five of them, which wona great admiration among the audience. Unfortunately some of the scores weremissing, and there exsit only three preludes as we can see nowdays.Considering that there is a lack of study on the three preludes at present, theauthor aims to make a research on them through practice and literature research. Thispaper firstly introduces the cultural background of America’s urgent demand for thedevelopment of its music as well as Gershwin’s life experiences and creationbackground, and then analyzes Three Preludes for Piano in detail, mainly on theanalysis of its characteristics of music style and performing skills. The music stylesinclude Blues, Ragtime and earlier Jazz music and the performing skills are mainlysummarized after the author’s long time of performing practice. All in all, this paper isexpected to contribute to the deeper understanding of and fondness for Gershwin forpiano learners.
