The research was initially inspired by some bewilderment and problems of contemporary Chinese art the author encountered, the subject of study is the city skirt of Cao Chang Di art district first occupied since1998. In2001, the first art area was established making it a combination of artists, galleries, developers, village committee and local villagers. The paper try to explore the cooperation between artists there and gallery institutions and transformation took place there through the years. The contemporary Chinese art market saw a sharp increase between2006and2008, records are achieved, the seemingly contemporary Chinese art-relevant circle consisted of many big and small systems are overheated. In this context, in2007, the Cao Chang Di art district has been instrumental in this movement. As the "Gray brick" and "Red brick" established respectively that year, a number of foreign galleries moved in, with emerging and established artists settled down there. Situated on the rim of the5th ring road, close to the airport, adjacent to the798Art District, Chinese Film Museum, Railway Museum, Cao Chang Di art district is included in the national reserve land. Since2008, the area has been under threat of removal.Though up till2012, Cao Chang Di is still growing naturally, there’s no guarantee for its stability, it may be taken away in the wind of gentrification at any time. Cao Chang Di to some degree reflects some realistic circumstances of contemporary Chinese art, and some ups and downs as well as complicated relationships among artists, galleries, collectors both domestic and overseas, developers and the government. What relevance could be generated by these phenomena and the art our time needs?...
