| Treatise on Calligraphy by Sun Guoting was an importanttheoretical and aesthetic work on Chinese calligraphy of ancient China’scalligraphy theories. Based on his practice, Sun became the firstcalligrapher to make a thorough and profound conclusion of thecalligraphy theories by his earlier generations. He, with the perspective ofConfucianism and Taoism, involved widely and discussed deeply in hismasterpiece, which affected the later generations profoundly. Therefore,this thesis zooms in on Sun’s composing idea in Treatise on Calligraphyand the profound influence it had on today’s calligraphy.The thesis is composed with three chapters which are structured asfollow. Chapter One offers a general introduction of Sun Guoting,Treatise on Calligraphy and the composing idea involved. Chapter Twointroduces the background of Treatise on Calligraphy and compares itlaterally and longitudinally in a particular era and reveals its history andSun’s deep accumulation on calligraphy. Chapter Three, as the main part,expounds on Sun’s composing idea from the perspective of the subjectand the procedure of creation, in which the former relates to calligraphy-making in terms of the leading role of the subject, his emotional input,personality and temperament, while the later analyzes the effect ofsubjective condition on calligraphy-making. Chapter Four discusses theinfluence of Treatise on Calligraphy on the later generations and itsimportant guiding significance to today’s calligraphy. |
