The role of native language has always been one of the most important subjects in the field of foreign language learning. Traditionally, we hold the idea that the negative effect stands for the only factor on the effect of native language, that’s to say, the native language stands in the way of foreign language learning. Meanwhile, the author believes that the so-called theory on negative impact or we can say the interference of native language has its own one-sidedness. It didn’t reveal the essence of language learning, nor did the inner connection between the native language and foreign language learning. Superficially, the native language do interfere the foreign language learning, while when we trace it to cause, we can be surprised to find out that it is a promoter that native language plays in the process of foreign language learning. Owing to the basic language structure of native language, it is normal for foreign language learners to borrow those kinds of knowledge to achieve the purpose of communication. It is a kind of learning strategy, and also the only way which must be passed. Learners will unconsciously use the previous experience of native language acquisition to think, analyze, compare or integrate when learning a foreign language. Being the basis of FL learning, the native language takes part in the whole process of FL learning. Therefore, the effect of the native language to the foreign language study, especially for the middle school students, has not only ’the negative influence’ or ’the interference effect’, but also, to a certain extent, has positively affects with the promoter function. On the basis of the previous researches and theories on language transfer, empirical researches like questionnaires and3months’ teaching experiment on80senior-one students in two classes of the First Middle School in Hengyang County were employed to examine whether there is positive influence of foreign language learning, especially in the preliminary stage. The teacher in the experiment group attached much emphasis on the similarities between mother tongue and the foreign language, from the perspective of pronunciation, lexis, syntax etc. While regular teaching procedures carried out in the control group. The objectives of this thesis can be listed as follows:1) what’s the current situation of students’ application of mother tongue when learning a foreign language and what’s their expectation towards teachers’employment of mother tongue when teaching a foreign language?2) Whether it is profitable for mother tongue in foreign language learning? If it is, then it works in which aspect? This thesis is composed of six parts. The first part is the introduction with the background and the significant of the research. The second part is the literature review and the recent research on the language transfer both at home and abroad. The third part is the designation of the research in this thesis. Then the fourth part comes to the further analysis of the data in the experimental research. The next part is the pedagogical implications on the basis of the previous analysis. The last part is the conclusion of the study. Shortcomings in this research was also listed in the hope of providing some reference to the future research and thus to promote the qualities of language teaching as well as the outcome of students’language learning.
