The second language acquisition or foreign language learning is a complicated process in which many factors influence the final acquisition of a foreign language and among them the first language's influence is definitely inevitable. Language transfer is a common phenomenon in foreign language learning, which can be divided into interlingual transfer and interlingual transfer. Language transfer results from the similarities and dissimilarities between the foreign language and the mother tongue. Positive transfer occurs where there are similarities between the two languages and will facilitate foreign language learning, while negative transfer results from their differences and will lead to errors. In the process of second language acquisition, especially in the elementary stage, mother tongue is the only tool for the learners to rely on. In China, when the students begin to learn English, they have acquired the mother tongue well, that is to say, they have formed the habit of Chinese thinking pattern which is rooted in their mind. And the English learning is only limited to the school and the time which is spent on English learning and teaching is limited. The fact that the influence which Chinese exerts on English is much obvious can be attributed to all the above factors.Language transfer usually occurs in the level of phonetics, grammar and vocabulary. This paper mainly focuses on the level of vocabulary. That is because vocabulary is the basic material for the language learning. Without vocabulary, language will not exist any more. And the vocabulary teaching can be one of the most difficult tasks in the English learning and teaching at the senior high school. And the Chinese learners tend to find the peer to peer relationship between English words and Chinese words. And the synonym in the English vocabulary also causes difficulty to the English learning. So the author mainly analyzes the positive and negative transfer of Chinese on English vocabulary in terms of form, meaning and use. The author conducted the research and got some data by means of questionnaire, interview and the usual test results. Based on these analysis and investigation, the author puts forward two pedagogical implications on vocabulary teaching. In the end, we should pay more attention to the positive role which the mother tongue plays while we also should not neglect the differences between these two languages. We should try to make appropriate or reasonable use of the mother tongue and make the students acquire more vocabulary in their language study.
