3D geological modeling and visualization is an important part of geo-spatial informationscience, an important research content for GIS applied to geological engineering and an effectiveway reproduction of the geological body3D information and comprehensively analyse rapidlyand in time. Got effective utilization in the oil mineral, geological survey, mapping remotesensing etc.Aim at the problems of use what data types and3D model, how to establish the geological3D model and how to intuitively show the created model, this paper analyzes several commonlyused methods of the3D geological modeling, separately carried on the detailed discussion. Bycomparing the advantages and disadvantages of them, choice of the generalized tri-prism modelto establish model3D geological bodies in the end. This paper choose mine material as datasources, discusses the data structure and how to coordinate conversion fully according to thecharacteristics of mine data. Generalized tri-prism model characteristic is simple modelingprocess efficiency,use different formation formed by the intersection of TIN network asgeneralized triangular prism and bottom, with formation within the mine as three prismatic edge.This is not only beneficial to set up model and can well performance geological layer properties.The established generalized tri-prism article third for edge not parallel, so to carry on thetetrahedron subdivision. In this paper we use SVID method, each triangular prism cutting intothree tetrahedron as the smallest model unit. For three-dimensional geological model ofvisualization, this paper combined with the characteristics of VTK visualization tool, put forwarda generalized tri-prism modeling method based on VTK. In this paper the characteristics andstructure VTK, has made the specific comprehensive description, analysis VTK visualizationmethods process and principle. Using the principle of generalized tri-prism modeling andtetrahedron subdivision, this paper improved VTK visualization method to make generalizedtri-prism modeling method and VTK visualization technology improve in3D geologicalmodeling aspects.This paper do the experiment based on mine material for data, have done the modeling andvisualization examples, from the data extraction to three prism framework construction and thefinal3D visualization, this paper is step by step makes a detailed instruction. and theexperimental results is get the3D geological dynamic and interactive display of the modeling area.3D geological modeling and visualization present fully indicate that the application of themodeling method and visualization technology have the feasibility and advancement in theoryand practice.
