For the existing problems in the field of domestic marine water quality monitoring, we investigate some research results of the domestic and international monitoring system for marine water quality, then we reference to the marine water quality standards (GB3097-1997) and choose temperature, salinity, pH, ammonia and dissolved oxygen as the monitoring elements, an automatic monitoring system based on GPRS and Beidou for coastal water quality are designed finally. We select a variety of water quality sensors and fix them on the floating body and then put them into sea to collect data of the marine quality, and then the water quality data collected is send to the data center in land through the GPRS network provided by the China Mobile. Since Beidou having a communication and positioning functions, we use the Beidou communication mode to backup the GPRS one to make the information transmission more reliable while providing location information with Beidou communication. The system can provide the real-time positions on monitoring point and data of marine water quality and so on, it carry out the distributed marine water quality monitoring with the mobile wireless network. The monitoring system does not require the addition of reagents, and it is of more time-saving, labor-saving and more intuitive than the manual analysis method, which can reflect the real-time marine water quality, monitor and alarm on exception data. The automatic monitoring system for water quality can enhance the monitoring and prediction capability for ecosystem of the coastal waters.Firstly, we analyze the state-of-the-art on the marine environment monitoring, especially in water quality monitoring at home and abroad, we find that the environmental monitoring ways in marine water quality are of a variety of ways, each method has its own superiority, and the way water quality monitoring based on wireless telemetry has become the main monitoring way. The ultrashort wave is one of the more used water telemetry ways at this stage, its advantage is stable, reliable, but the users must take a lot of wireless network construction. Especially the more used ways for the remote data transmission do not have mobility. Due to the rapid development of mobile communication technology, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network has covered offshore without blind spots, it provides a guideline in the project to choose proper communications network. Combined with the results of marine water quality monitoring system at home and abroad, we make the eventual establishment of marine water quality monitoring system based on GPRS and the Beidou, and we carry out the overall system architecture, hardware architecture and software design. Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay is selected for the monitoring points, and14points are selected to represent the monitored waters. The obtained monitoring data on temperature, salinity, pH, ammonia and dissolved oxygen is analyzed in sea surface. Through the analysis on the data of the selected waters, it proves that the system is fully functional, can initially complete the monitoring of the water quality of coastal waters. The system is a general guidance and a role model of our near-shore marine environment monitoring, lays the foundation for China’s water environment monitoring technology reaching the level of developed countries, provides the state-of-the-art means for emergency monitoring and environmental regulation of the environmental management department.
