Objectives:This study was designed to observe the change of the serum galectin-3(Gal-3) levels in patients with different type of coronary heart disease and analysis its correlation with coronary gensini score, plasma high-sensitivity C-reactive protein(hs-CRP) and serum monocyte chemokine protein-1(MCP-1),investigating the clinical value of Gal-3in patients with coronary heart disease. Methods:This study included97patients (male69,female28,average age64.19±8.65years) with coronary heart disease that were confirmed by coronary angiography (at least one major coronary artery>50%) and hospitalized in the cardiology department of the Second Xiangya Hospital,Central South University between May,2012and Jan,2013. Patients were divided into three groups according to Braunwald cardiology:stable angina(SA) group(n=31),unstable angina(UA) group (n=35),acute myocardial infarction(AMI) group(n:=31).Thirty non-coronary heart disease subjects that were confirmed by coronary angiography were recruited as control group. All the subjects’general clinical data were collected, the concentration of serum Gal-3and MCP-1were assayed with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, the concentration of hs-CRP was measured by Hitachi7600-020automatic biochemical analyzer, and the coronary gensini score was calculated by using special computer software. Results:The levels of serum Gal-3were significantly higher in patients with coronary heart disease than the patients in control group(P<0.05).The levels of serum Gal-3were significantly higher in patients of UA group and AMI group than SA groups(P<0.05).The concentration of Gal-3in AMI group were higher than UA group, but the difference did not reach statistical significance(P>0.05).Serum Gal-3levels were correlated positively with coronary gensini score and hs-CRP,MCP-1(all P<0.05).Conclusions:1.Serum Gal-3was significantly increased in patients with coronary heart disease, suggesting that Gal-3involved in the formation of coronary heart disease2.Patients with acute coronary syndrome have a higher Gal-3level than patients with stable angina, suggesting that Gal-3reflects the state of coronary plaque.3.Serum Gal-3levels were positively correlated with coronary gensini score and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein(hs-CRP),MCP-1.4.Gal-3may be a new biomarker for acute coronary syndrome in coronary heart disease and can reflect the severity of impaired coronary arteries.
