Objective:To investigate the association between serum Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and High-mobility group box-1(HMGB1) levels in type2diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients. Methods:Sixty patients with type2diabetes mellitus were recruited from Lanzhou University Second Hospital including30T2DM and30type2diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients. Thirty healthy control subjects were selected. Diabetes duration, age, lipids, blood pressure, fasting and two-hour postprandial plasma glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin A1c were collected. The serum levels of BDNF and HMGB1were quantified using ELISA, BDNF and HMGB1mRNA was detected by quantitative real-time RT-PCR in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC).Pearson correlation method tested the association between serum BDNF and HMGB1levels in type2diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients. Results:The level of BDNF was significantly lower in the T2DM group compared to control subjects (P<0.05), whereas the level of HMGB1was higher. The level of BDNF was lower in the DPN group than in the T2DM group. In type2diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients., BDNF was showed a significant relationship between BDNF and HMGB1(r=-0.425,P<0.05).Conclusion:In type2diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients there was significant correlation between the levels of HMGB1and BDNF. Both BDNF and HMGB1may participate in the process of type2diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
