Optical Coherence Tomography Analysis In Macular Thickness Of Type2Diabetic Patients With Cataract After Phacoemulsification Surgery And IOL Implantation

Objective. To investigate the influence of uneventful phacoemulsification surgery and IOL implantation to the macular area in type2diabetic patients with cataract.Patients and methods. We chose32type2diabetic patients with cataract who need to undergo a phacoemulsification operation on one eye. OCT (Optical coherence tomography) measurements were performed before the operations, and1day,7days,30days after the operations in all64eyes. The32operated eyes were assigned to the study group, while the other32eyes were assigned to the control group. We compared the FRT (foveal retinal thickness)(at lmm) and TMV (at6mm, including paramacular perimacular and foveal volume) of the two groups with SPSS19.0software, using t-test and Q-test to evaluate the differences between the two groups, so as to judge whether the macular edema had been aggravated.Results. All but1eye had got good visual outcome in the study group. Statistically significant difference (P<0.05) was shown between the two groups in both FRT and TMV at7days (study group270.94±20.26μm, control group260.54±20.88μm) and30days(study group275.46±25.38μm, control group260.68±22.95μm, P<0.05) after the surgery. There were10eyes with macular edema occurrence or aggravation in the study group, while3eyes in the control group.Conclusion. There is more chance of macular edema in eyes with phacoemulsification surgery and IOL implantation than the eyes without cataract operation in type2diabetic patients. High risk factors were found, including long diabetic course, NPDR, anterior chamber flash after surgery and smoking.
