Abstract Objective: to investigate the effects of phacoemulsification on the maculafollowing uncomplicated phacoemulsification by optical coherence tomography (OCT).And the selection of the same age without cataract40cases40eyes in normal subjectsserved as normal control group. Methods: seventy eyes of the senile cataract werechosen randomly. The uncomplicated phacoemulsification was performed. OCT wasexamined preoperatively,1week and1month after the surgery. Preoperative visualacuity, the retinal thickness and phaco power were compared with those after surgery. Results: In70eyes, the preoperative mean foveal thickness was (143.9±16.8)um andthe normal control group was(144.5±15.3)um,There was no statistical differencebetween two groups. Cataract patients before operation and1weeks after operation(156.8±35.6) um comparison, the difference was not statistically significant (t=1.762,P>0.05).Cataract patients before operation and1weeks after operation (156.8±35.6)um comparison, the difference was not statistically significant (t=1.762, P>0.05).In13eyes with Tyndall sign (++), the mean postoperative foveal thickness was thickerthan the mean preoperative value (t=2.753, P <0.05). In lower phaco power group, themean postoperative foveal thickness was (155.5±19.2) um and the higher phaco powergroup was (171.6±31.5) um (t=2.412, P <0.05). The best corrected visual acuity aftersurgery had a negative correlation with the retinal thickness. Conclusions: The retinalthickening and macular edema can be found after uncomplicated phacoemulsification. The higher phaco power results in significant inflammation and thicker retina. Thevisual consequences were proportional to the degrees of macular thickening.
