Guoshanyao’s Mian dialect, at Bibei town,in Ruyuan, Guangdong Province of China, belongs toYao language branch in Miao-Yao language group. The condition on Bibei Mian dialect resourcelies on a middle level in an estimation, and is not enough to remain Bibei Mian phoneticdevelopment. In the aspect of phonetic system, there are73initials,49finals and11tones. The initialsrefer to ones with voice or voicelessness, with “w” or “j”, with an aspirated sound or a half-voice.In finals, there are8main vowels, without the difference between a long vowel and a shortvowel. The final “” is just seen in the loan words of modern Chinese. There are3longfinal-codas (-m,-n,-) and3short ones (-p、-t、-), in which the glottal stop coda “” is acommon one. There are11tones (including7long ones and4short ones). The matches of theinitials and finals are in regulations. In the aspect of the phonetic change in speaking, there are6changed pitches, which are alsothe unchanged ones. How to change the pitch of a syllable depends on the pitches of the adjacentsyllables. There are4main types of the change of initials and finals in speaking, such as thedropped-off, the mergence, the dissimilation and the assimilation. The tones of Bibei Miandialect were merged, spilt up or cracked in past years. The contacts between Mian dialect andChinese dialects on phonetics can be generally found in the loan words from Min dialect,Cantonese, Hakka dialect and the ancient Chinese.Compared with Youxi Mian dialect recorded with the current alphabetic writing scheme ofRuyuan Yao language, Bibei Mian dialect has its own characteristics: the voiced initials aredevoiced faster, and the several codas have changed: some plosive codas “t” have come into “”,some nasal codas have worked off or into “”, and some velar nasal have turned into alveolarone.
