Betong, in southern Thailand, is a place so far as we know gathered into communities andusing Yue dialect on overseas. Based on field survey, we have made a brief introduction on thestatus of Chinese and overseas Chinese communities and the Yue dialect used in Betong. Thisthesis is going to describe the phonology of the Yue dialect used in Betong and Rong Countyfrom the consonants, vowels and tones and sum up both the similarities and differences. We willalso make some thematic comparative study of prominent voice features, such as the aspiratedsituation of the voiced initials devoiced, the mergence of ancient “jing” and “duan” and thepronunciation of ancient “cong, xin, xie”. By comparison this paper shows that language contactis the main cause of the differences. The Rong dialect of these two places have more commonthan differences in characteristics.
