A Study On Image Of Hu People In The Novels Of Tang And Five Dynasties

Tang and Five Dynasties novels created many characters,among which the exotic images of Hu people constitute a unique landscape.These novels are not only from one side to show the life of Hu people in Central Plains of China at that time,but also reflects the perceptions and attitudes of people in Central Plains for these outsiders.This paper tries to analyze images of Hu people in the novels of Tang and Five Dynasties,and compare with the short stories of the Ming and Qing Dynasties longitudinally,in order to find the influence of Tang and Five Dynasties Hu people novels to them.To study the images of Hu people in the novel of Tang and Five Dynasties,first must know which images are Hu people in the novels of Tang and Five Dynasties.This paper,in reference to other people’s books and papers,define the image of Hu people.According to this definition, find out the ones which include Hu people in the novels of Tang and Five Dynasties,then based on the creation time of these novels to analyze them.Bases on the novels,through reading and analyzing hundreds of novels of Hu people in Tang and Five Dynasties,find out the common features between the characters.The paper does not divide them into Hu businessmen and Hu monks,but divide them into three categories by different characteristics that Hu people have in the novels.They are Hu people who good at identifying precious things, being miraculous and mastering special skills.The first kind of Hu people have special appreciation ability of various priceless treasures.They not only know their names but also know how to use them. Some of them even can see the gas of the treasures,so as to find them.The second kind of Hu people have some magical abilities.They use and display their abilities.Some of them can predict, some of them can help Buddhist treat injuries or escape from the evil,and some of them can pray for rain and relief disaster.The third kind of Hu people are Kunlun Slaves.Someone of them is exceedingly nimble and highly skilled in Kung Fu.He can help his master who is in troubles.The others are good at diving and able to dive in underwater to look for treasures. In the Hu novels of Tang and Five Dynasties,there are many kinds of Hu people.Through the analysis of two typical image of Hu businessmen and Hu monks,we can see that there is different cognition about Hu people.The reasons of it are manifold.At the last of the paper, analyze the reason of a large numbers of Hu people image appear in novels of Tang and Five Dynasties.Besides, selecting the Strange Tales from Liaozhai and San Yan and Er Pai as the representative, analyze the Hu people image in the novels of the Ming and Qing Dynasties,so that find out their inheritance and development.
