China-Arab States Economic And Trade Forum VIP Reception Interpreting Practice Report

China (Ningxia) International Investment and Trade Fair&China-Arab States Economic and Trade Forum (hereinafter referred to as the Fair&Forum), the highest level and the most influential multilateral and bilateral event of international cooperation in economic and trade field between China and Arab States as well as another national platform for opening up, is a grand international activity. During this year’s event, the author has served as a liaison-escort interpreter for many political VIPs attending this event.Based on the VIP reception interpreting practice of the2012Fair&Forum, this report describes the background of the interpreting task as well as the specific interpreting process. During her interpreting practice, the author finds out that liaison-escort interpreters have multiple roles:such as helper, coordinator, cultural transmitter, cultural mediator, etc. Therefore, in this practice report, the author focuses on the analysis of the roles she has played during the interpreting practice and draws the conclusion that liaison-escort interpreters are not simply conduits in the communicative act, they have other different roles. In the last part of the practice report, the author also evaluates her interpreting performance in a comprehensive way and puts forward some unresolved problems encountered during her interpreting practice. The author wishes the practice report may shed some light on future studies on this subject and draw liaison-escort interpreters’ attention to the roles they may play in interpreting activities.
