| Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll’s most well-known work in the19thcentury inBritain, who is renowned as the father of children’s literature, is translated into manylanguages. Also, it is rendered into Chinese by Chinese literature translators, of whom YuenRen Chao and Wu Juntao are two representative figures.The thesis is aimed to explain thedifferences between these two Chinese versions from the perspective of culture-loaded words,dialogues and nursery rhymes by means of contrast and analysis. The whole thesis is dividedinto six chapters, in which the first chapter makes clear the research objectives andsignificance, research status, main points and possible innovations and thesis structure. Thesecond chapter defines culture-specific words in the novel and classifies them into threecategories, material culture-loaded words, social culture-loaded words and lingusticculture-loaded words, pointing out the difficulties when they are translated, and then analyzesthe differences between these two Chinese versions in combination with historicalbackground. The third chapter defines dialogues under discussion and their functions in thenovel, indicating that dialogues should be colloquial, emotionally right and context-based.Afterwards, it contrasts the two Chinese versions from the perspective of individual languagepattern, individual register and cohesion of turns in fictional dialogues. The fourth chapterdiscusses the characteristics and functions of nursery rhymes in the fiction, stating briefly twodifficulties, rhyme and language style before contrasting the two versions. The fifth chapterexpounds on these differences, while the last chapter makes the conclusion that it ismulti-factors that contribute to the formation of the two versions, of which the social contextand cultural background is the primary cause, domesticating and foreignizing methods thedirect cause, different reader-oriented views and translation motive the significant cause. |
