It has been thirty years since Haruki murakami, famous contemporary Japanesewriter, boarded the literary world in1979by his debut Hear the Wind Sing. Hisendless interest gives rise to his extensive works: novels, essays, reportage, andtranslation. The process that Haruki murakami became a fighter from a pettybourgeoisie can be seen from his works. His creative works can be divided into threestages with ten years for each stage. The first stage is called nonintervention, which isfrom1979to1989. The second stage is from1990to2000and this is named as thestage of being involved. The third ten years is the stage of seeking for responsibilityand the duration is from2001to2010.Based on the above understanding, this thesis consists of four chapters. Chapterone introduces lifetime of Haruki murakami and research status of his works. Chaptertwo studies early youth trilogy with the theme named lose, in which1960s is lookedback from the perspective of1970s. Faced with shattered dreams and highlydeveloped economics, Younger generation of postwar can only hide themselves intocardboard with loneliness and helpless. Chapter three involves the works of middleperiods under the theme–alienation. The rapid running steps of modern urbanitesfails to catch up with the booming Japanese economy and people with unbalancedspirit had lost individual subjective in this process. Main characters were forced towalk away from their narrow spiritual world and survived in endless dance with theseek for individuality to avoid alienation. Throughout his works, there is oneinvariable factor, that is attention to ego, maintains of self-integrity, and pursue offreedom. No matter lose, alienation, and violence, they are all unify the theme of ego. The change from writing personal inner world to discussing social problems byconstructing helluva stories during the stages of nonintervention, being involved andseeking for responsibility gives expression to Haruki murakami’s growingconsciousness of responsibility. Haruki murakami is always keeping a watchful eyeon people’s spiritual world and he is becoming a fighter gradually from a pettybourgeoisie.
