The Association Between Mobile Phone Dependence And Social Support And Personality Trait Among College Students

In modern society, mobile phone have become an necessary material in our lives, the use of mobile phone has become a new lifestyle and life habit.The progress of technology and continuous upgrading of mobile products brings people convenience and pleasure, but it also has gradually produced a series of problems, such as excessive or over use of mobile phone--people indulge in using mobile phone--thereby people have formed psychological dependence on mobile phones, which has caused serious impact on people’s learning, work and life. In this context, the study of mobile phone addiction has become an important subject of behavioral addictions research area.Basing on behavioral addiction theory and relating literatures, this paper mainly uses questionnaires to college students as the research object. It selects personality traits and social support as two independent variables to study the situation of college students’ relying on mobile phones, then investigates these two independent variables’predictive effect on college students’phone dependency, thereby explores the influence factors of dependency, so as to provides theoretical support for the prevention of mobile phone dependence and also provides ideas for subsequent research. The results showed that:(1) For college students of different genders, there is no significant difference in the overall scores and the dimension of conflicting, technological and withdrawal, significant difference in the dimension of distinct and sustainability.(2) For college students of different grade, there is significant difference in the overall scores and dimension of sustainability, conflicting and withdrawal, no significant difference in the dimension of distinct and technological.Sophomore students scored significantly higher than postgraduates in the overall scores and the dimension of sustainability; Freshman and Sophomore scored significantly higher than postgraduates in the conflicting dimension.(3) There is no significant difference between mobile phone dependence and whether the participants fall in love or not, significant difference between distinct and falling in love. In other dimensions, there is no significant difference.(4) Study shows a significant negative correlation between social support (objective support, subjective support, degree of utilization of support) and mobile phone dependence (the overall scores, distinct, sustainability, conflict, technological and withdrawal). There is significant differ between the sore-high group and the score-low group of the mobile phone dependence score, and the score-low group scored higher in the social support and its dimensions. (5) There is a significant negative correlation between extraversion (E) and mobile phone dependence (the overall scores, distinct, sustainability, conflict, technological and withdrawal), the score-high group scored significantly lower than the score-low group; There is a significant negative correlation between neuroticism (N) and mobile phone dependence and its dimensions, a significant negative correlation between psychoticism (P) and mobile phone dependence (the overall scores, sustainability, conflict, distinct), no significant negative correlation in other dimensions.(6)Social support has negative predicted function on mobile phone dependence; Neuroticism (N) has a positive role on mobile phone dependence.
