Language is one of the indispensable tools for human communication. With thedevelopment of society, people gradually pay more attention to the promotion of language.During past three decades, variety of buzzwords is appearing in our life via the media,television, Internet and other channels. The popular words has gradually infiltrated into everyaspect of people’s life, not only in China, but also in Japan.In recent years, lots of linguistics researchers begin to study the popular words. However,majority of Chinese researchers mainly work on the popular words used in China.There are only few studies on comparison of popular words used in China and Japan.Based on the three formation modes of popular words and culture reflected by popularwords, this paper firstly studies the different society development status between China andJapan since1970s. Meanwhile, this text individually enumerates some of the popular wordsused in four periods, taking ten years as a period. In the end, this paper will put forward somesuggestions on the teaching of popular words used in Chinese and Japanese. Hope this willprovide some help for foreign language education.
