Systemic Functional Linguistics provides a theoretical basis for analyzing theliterature works. Interpersonal meaning is drawn from Halliday’s SFG. According to thepurpose of the language usage, Halliday proposes three meta-functions of language:ideational, interpersonal and textual. Interpersonal function can be used to exchangeinformation and to establish social relations. It is a main method to express the speaker’sstatue, attitude and judgment towards things. The interpersonal meaning focuses on theinteractivity of the language, and is concerned with the interaction between the speakerand listener, to establish the speech roles in the conversation. It is mainly realized bymood system and modality system.Big Breasts&Wide Hips is the masterpiece of Mo Yan who is the first winner ofthe Nobel Prize in literature in China. Up to now, most scholars have analyzed thisnovel from different perspectives. However, nobody could research the novel from alinguistic view of systemic functional grammar. This thesis attempts to use mood andmodality to interpret this novel. The findings show that the mood system can reflectrelationships between the mother and others and her social status, while the character’spersonality traits can be reflected through the modality system. We make use of theinterpersonal meaning theory to analyze Big Breasts&Wide Hips, and to verify thetheory for Chinese literature work. Moreover, this thesis may provide a brand-newperspective to reread the classical novel, which is written by Mo Yan.
