Comparative Analysis Of Media Coverage On Both Sides Of The Taiwan Straits On The Issue Of “Haze”

‘Haze’ is people often called of the air pollution in recent years, which is the PM2.5 as it basic constitutive element. PM2.5 refers the contaminant less than 2.5 micron that suspended in the air, caused by people’s pollution action, It is very harm to human’s health. So that ‘haze’ became the focus of media reports. In this context, this paper guided by the agenda-setting theory and the frame theory, use the content analysis as the main research methods. Take the reports about haze issue of <Southern Metropolis Daily> and <Liberty Times>, which the both papers is the mainstream media of both sides of the Taiwan Straits as the research object. I am want to find out that if the report of haze by the media in the different ideology/ marketing environment/ political position have some special basic communication characteristics, and what the similarities or differences on the choice of the news frame, and why.As the result, we study that both newspaper reported a large coverage on haze issue. In terms of communication characteristic, <Liberty Times> take much more news genre, ignoring the depth meaning of the fact. It’s using more news photo, while reflecting the marked tendency of fear appeals. They choice of the news information sources are in consistent, but in the specific application they both has its own characteristics. In selecting the theme, <Southern Metropolis Daily> take more attention on the fact of the haze, and focus on discussing the countermeasures. While the <Liberty Times> is a market orientation media, all it’s coverage want to cater for audience, however it also showed a stronger functions of supervision of public opinion. The use radio about the frame "moral criticism" and "explaining attribution" of < Southern Metropolis Daily > is obviously lower than <Liberty Times>, and the further study of this paper found that there did not exist frame diffusion and resonance state between both newspapers. At the same time, this paper try to found the reason of those differences, thought it mainly due to the difference between market environment and political environment of both sides of the Taiwan Straits.
