Belt conveyor as transport equipment is commonly used in mine transportation system. It has an important influence on running state of the whole transportation system and even the entire mine production. In order to ensure belt conveyor can run safely and reliably, the scholars and the coal industry workers at home and abroad have made a series of studies on safety monitoring of the belt conveyor. At present, there are two main ways to monitor the state of belt conveyor: one is to establish an automatic monitoring and protection system; another is to find faults by manual patrol. However, both of them have strengths and limitations. Therefore, this article merges the two ways to design a safety monitoring system of belt conveyor which can effectively use the results of patrol and get more comprehensive monitoring information and reliable fault diagnosis.Firstly, main potential safety hazard of belt conveyor was analyzed to determine fault types needed to monitor. The monitoring parameters and specific monitoring scheme were determined according to fault mechanism and characteristics. And function frame of the safety monitoring system for mine belt conveyor was developed.Then, the overall system scheme was studied, and constructed a master-slave monitoring system which consists of distributed monitoring substation, moving patrol substation, communication network combining wireless and wired and master monitoring station. And each part of the system including software and hardware was studied and designed in detail.In hardware design, information acquisition and power supply circuits of the distributed monitoring substation and detecting parameters, position and manual detection information acquisition, LCD display and power module circuits of the moving patrol substation were studied and designed detailedly. Moreover, the related communication devices were designed and monitoring equipment of the master station was briefly introduced.In software design, further expounded the function of substations and communication devices and drew out the flow charts of main programs, and wrote C programs of AVR microcontroller. In addition, monitoring and management programs and display interface were written according to the function of master station with Lab VIEW.Finally, through the combination of software and hardware, the system can realize real-time monitoring for belt conveyor. And the substation circuits, wireless communication performance and the monitoring program of master station of the system were tested separately. Test results showed that the system could realize the main function designed.
