In most functional neurosurgeries, the lesions are next to the nervecenter, thus intraoperative wake-ups and neurophysiological monitoring onpatients are required for defining the relationship between the lesions and thefunctinal areas in case of serious neurological deficits after surgeries. Therefore, the use of anesthetic drugs has been strictly demanded.Dexmedetomidine, a relative new sedative agent, is featured with analgesicfunction, antianxiety function, no respiratory depression, and seldominterference to the cerebral electrophysiologic activities. Functionalneurosurgeons have paid close attention to it. This article recounts theworking mechanism of dexmedetomidine, and its interference to thecerebral electro-physiologic activities as well as its application in functionalneurosurgeries.
