Peripheral Facial Paralysis is a disease with unknown cause of facia 1 paralysis, also known as Bell’s Palsy in Western Medicine. Its clinical features often show acute attack and deteriotate rapidly. Influenza or v iral infection histories can be found among the patients. At the beginnin g, the clinical symptoms mainly show askew of eye and mouth (particularly on affected side), also including postauricularache (particularly on aff ected side), tongue numbness, etc. It is called "mouth askew"、"mouth an d eye askew" in the Chinese medicine theory. According to the theory, ove rload and sub-health status will lead to meridians of emptiness and solid protection. Wind-heat and wind-cold will take advantage of this situati on and attack the face meridian, causing blood blockage, tendons dysfunct ion, muscle out of control, at the end it becomes facial paralysis.ObjectiveCurrently, the treatments offered by the western medicine for the per ipheral facial paralysis are showed as below:during acute phase, anti-in flammatory and antiviral drugs should be taken; during recovery phase, ph ysical therapy is on top of the treatment; if the symptoms still last Ion g, a surgery is needed. On the basis of the Chinese medical theory, acupu ncture has the most significant effect. As the disease will directly affe ct the patient’s appearance and harm their physical and psychological sta tus, the emphasis of the treatment should be improving the significant ef feet, shorter the pathogenesis and reducing the sequela.Opposing needling method, as well known as one of the ancient "Nine n eedling", its theory is mainly about acupuncturing the opposite side of y our affected side. By acupuncturing the contralateral acupoints, it will be more excited to inspired the gas, dredging the meridians, so that it c an improve the speed of the running blood. Recently, opposing needling ha s been used by some physicians for treating peripheral facial paralysis, including solo or combined therapy, it all turns to a significant outcome. The subject is based on this clinical research on using opposing need ling of the tutor in these years, mining the ancient treatment methods, o ptimizating needling therapy for this disease specifically in order to pr ovide more clinical evidence for this kind of acupuncture treatment thera py for peripheral facial paralysis. The objective of this clinical research is to investigate the feasibi lity and effect of opposing needling method treating peripheral facial pa ralysis through comparing the data of the comparative group of opposing n eedling test and control group treating treating peripheral facial paraly sis.MethodsIt is a random controlled prospective study,70 patients who have met the criteria all came from the acupuncture and rehabilitation department in No.2 hospital of traditional Chinese medicine of Guangdong Province. They are randomly divided into 2 groups (35 cases per group) by the 10.34 statistics software. Opposing needling method was used in the experimental group while the control group used the routine acupuncture treatment. H-B evaluation form of facial nerve function grading scale, facial nerve paralysis grading scale form and facial disability index (FDI) scale form (i.e., physical function FDIP and social function of FDIS) are used for comparing the outcome. As an observed treatment, the comprehensive evaluation of patients is done before and after the treatment. SPSS19.0 is used as a tool for data statistics, comparing the improvement of peripheral facial paralysis by using opposing needling.ResultsThe data(gender, age, course of diseases, affected sides, status of i llness) of the patients collected from (H-B evaluation form of facial ner ve function grading scale, facial nerve paralysis grading scale form and f acial disability index(FDI)scale form(i. e., physical function FDIP and soc ial function of FDIS) have been proved as no statistical significance (P> 0.05). After the random controlled prospective study is done, the H-B fac ial nerve grading scale, peripheral facial paralysis scale and facial disa bility index total score of experimental group and the control group have been compared and shows statistically significant difference (P<0.05), I t proved that both treatments can improve the recovery status of Baer par alysis. But after the comparison of the data in two groups, the experiment al group shows the effective rate of 82.35%, the total effective rate of 9 4.12%, while control group shows 57.72% effective rate,82.35% total effe ctive rate. What’s more, there are significant differences between experi mental and control group in the evaluation of facial nerve function gradi ng and somatic function of FDIP (P<0.05) while no significant difference is showed in sociality of FDIS(P> 0.05).ConclusionThe preliminary results of the study shows that the opposing needlin g therapy and routine acupuncture treatment group both are effective for treating peripheral facial paralysis, also can significantly improve the facial nerve function, physical status and sociality of peripheral facial paralysis, but the opposing needling therapy is even better than the rou tine acupuncture therapy according to the statistical analysis. No differ ence is found between 2 groups in improving the sociality. In conclude, the research shows the opposing needling therapy is more eff ective than the routine acupuncture after the comprehensive data analysis of this research.
