| ObjectiveKampo Medicine, also known as Japanese Medicine is originated from the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and however with the time and history moving on, Kampo Medicine has developed and differed itself from the origination TCM, and is featured with Japanese traditional medicine under the influence of its unique politics and culture.Especially, as the earliest westernized nation in the Asia, the Kampo Medicine in Japan had been almost ruined in its earlier reform, but now Kampo Medicine has rebirthed from the dying ash and further gains a foothold in nowadays world Medicine. This restoration is worthy of being the great experience for those nations which are also facing the conflict between traditional and modern cultures.Dr Domei Yakazu, a medical physician of the post-classical school is also the successor of Kampo Medicine in Japan, who adapted academic idea in Kampo Medicine combining with western scientific knowledge, and hence led to the restoration of Kampo Medicine. He is therefore entitled as a contributor to restoration and development of Kampo Medicine.The purpose of this study is firstly to summarize the clinical experiences in applications of Chinese materia medica to cold pathogenic diseases, mentioned in the work "Hundred methods of Kampo treatment" written by Domei Yakazu, and to conclude Dr. Yakazu’s medical thesis in "The Shanghan Lun" for improving clinical application of Kampo medicine. In addition, via studying Dr. Yakazu’s’s lifetime and contributions, we intend to enhance the international interaction and cooperation among nations in the traditional medicine field; thus provide some new aspects for the modernization of traditional medicine.MethodsThe method in this study is mainly based on documents analysis of Dr. Yakazu’s works " Hundred Methods of Kampo Treatment". Here we try to probe to its clinical cases and theory in his work" The Shanghan Lun" to reach some preliminary conclusions for clarifying Dr. Yakazu’s medical thesis, and hopefully further lead a new way in understanding of "The Shanghan Lun" and its research. Also, on the other hand, the understanding of Dr. Yakazu’s clinical experiences and thesis will potentially turn the page for curing some diseases in western medicine. Lastly, we will discuss Dr. Yakazu’s lifetime and contributions so as to enlighten some ideas for development and improvement of Kampo Medicine especially in nowadays when western medicine dominates.ConclusionIn the beginning section, the development of Kampo Medicine and a synopsis of different sects in Kampo will be given, followed by Dr. Yakazu’s full-scale introduction including his lifetime, academic background, works and his contributions as the first chapter. The second chapter gives reviews of Dr. Yakazu’s thesis from other scholars’ research and perspectives; Dr. Yakazu’s clinical practices, diagnosis and treatments to different syndrome, and some successful cases will be mentioned in the third chapter; the following chapter will concretely describe the application of those Chinese materia medica in "The Shanghan Lun"; and surly some critical Chinese herbs and their functions in this work will be exemplified in the fifth chapter. The last chapter is to conclude Dr. Yakazu’s contributions to Kampo Medicine and his influences on coming generations. |
