Objective:This study aimed to investigate the symptoms and syndrome of traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in patients with insomnia, to understood the relationship between liver and insomnia. On this basis,using clinical research method to evaluate the effect of blood-pricking therapy match with acupuncture in treating the main liver depression and spleen deficiency syndrome,to provide adequate clinical basis on treatment of insomnia from liver.Methods:1. Using self-designed questionnaire of insomnia of TCM in clinic to observe the gender, age distribution, course of the disease, clinical characteristics of symptoms and TCM symptoms of patients in affiliated hospital of Chengdu University of TCM, to analyze the distribution of TCM syndrome, then to select liver-related syndrome.2. Selecting patients with insomnia of stagnation of liver qi and spleen deficiency, the acupuncture treatment group as control group (34 cases), blood-pricking on Ganshu and Qimeng point plus acupuncture group as experimental group (33 cases). The acupuncture treatment was given once every other one day; blood-pricking treatment was given twice a week after the acupuncture.Evaluating the curative effect before and after the 4 weeks treatment respectively, observing PSQI, SAS, SDS, TCM syndrome score.Results:1.The main symptoms included being difficulty in falling asleep with fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness, palpitations and forgetfulness;the symptoms of TCM were: white tongue coating, fat tongue, dry mouth, red tongue body, teeth-marked tongue, dry eye, full stomach and abdominal, shapeless stool, bitter taste, both of rib and chest pain, thin pulse string and so on.2. Syndrome of TCM were mainly liver depression and spleen deficiency, and the frequencies of liver depression of the fire, deficiency of both heart and spleen, liver qi stagnation, disharmony between heart and kidney were high.3. PSQI score and the six sleeping factors, SAS, SDS score, Chinese medicine symptom score of liver depression and spleen deficiency were significant differences before and after the treatment (P<0.05); curative effect, sleep quality, the time to fall asleep, daytime dysfunction, SAS, SDS score were significant differences after treatment (P<0.05).Conclusions:1. The main clinical symptoms included being difficulty in falling asleep and so on; the main symptoms of TCM were groups of spleen deficient and liver depression.2. Syndrome of TCM were mainly stagnation of liver qi and spleen deficiency, and liver depression of the fire,deficiency of both heart and spleen, liver qi stagnation,disharmony between heart and kidney were common.3. Blood-pricking plus acupuncture was superior to pure acupuncture in treating insomnia of the liver-qi stagnation and the spleen deficiency and in improving sleep quality, the time to fall asleep, daytime dysfunction, anxiety and depression.
