Objectives:By investigating the childbirth expectations in primiparas and their spouses, to understand the level and correlations of childbirth expectations in primiparas and their spouses, to analysis the related factors of influencing the childbirth expectations in primiparas and their spouses, to propose feasibility recommendations to improving positive childbirth expectations in primiparas and their spouses, to provide evidences for healthcare providers to arrange prenatal education directly as well as offering high quality care in primiparas and their spouses. Methods:By convenience sampling method, we selected primiparas to be produced in hospital maternity wards and their spouses, then a questionnaire was applied on 235 pairs of primiparas and their spouses who meet the inclusion criteria from June to December of the level 3 first-class hospitals in Changchun. The questionnaire included two parts: general information of primiparas/their spouses and the Chinese version of Childbirth Expectation Questionnaire(CEQ). The database was established by Epidata 3.1software, and analyzed by SPSS19.0. In this study, the count data were using frequency and constituent ratio. The measurement data described by Mean ±SD.The one-way analysis of variance was used t-test 、 ANOVA 、 rank-sum test, and multiple-factor analysis was used multiple stepwise regression analysis, and correlation analysis was used Pearson.Results:1. The total mean score of the CEQ for primiparas was(4.02±0.35), In the five dimension of CEQ, the dimension“Caregiving Environment”got the highest score which was(4.49±0.36), the dimension “Labor pain expectations” got the lowest score which was(2.31±0.65). The total mean score of the CEQ for spouses of primiparas was(4.01±0.28), In the five dimension of CEQ, the dimension“CaregivingEnvironment”got the highest score which was(4.43±0.32), the dimension “Labor pain expectations” got the lowest score which was(2.53±0.58). Paired t-test was used to examine the differences in childbirth expectations of spouses and the result showed that there was a significant difference between primiparas and their spouses on the dimension“Labor pain expectations”(P<0.05), while, the overall childbirth expectation, caregiving environment, spousal support, control and participation and medical support displayed no significant difference(P>0.05).2. There were statistically differences on the overall childbirth expectations and each dimension of primiparas with different personal characteristics, such as age, residence, relationship with spouse, occupation, family income, education, whether planned pregnancy, frequency of prenatal examination, planned delivery way, perinatal health care knowledge, whether received childbirth education, preference of partner’s accompany and whether using assisted reproductive technology(P<0.05).3. There were statistically differences on the overall childbirth expectations and each dimensions of spouses with different personal characteristics, such as family income, whether planned pregnancy, planned delivery way, whether received childbirth education and whether using assisted reproductive technology(P<0.05).4. There were positively significant correlated of childbirth expectations between primiparas and their spouses, and the correlation coefficients were 0.132~0.722(P<0.05).5. Multivariate analysis results showed that childbirth expectations of spouses, family income, whether received childbirth education were entered model of childbirth expectations of primiparas. Childbirth expectations of primiparas, whether received childbirth education were entered model of childbirth expectations of spouses.Conclusions:1. Primiparas and their spouses had a high level of childbirth expectations especially towards caregiving environment, spousal support, control and participation.Medical support level got lower. While their expectations towards labor pain and their own ability to cope with the pain were the lowest.2. The researchers in this study using t-test to examine and analyze differences in childbirth expectations found that primiparas and their spouses had no significant differences on the subscale items concerning the overall expectation, caregiving environment, spousal support, control and participation and medical support. There was a significant difference between expectant parents on the dimension“Labor pain expectations” and spouses of primiparas got a higher childbirth expectation level.3. There were positively significant correlated of childbirth expectation between primiparas and their spouses.4. The factors that influence the childbirth expectation of primiparas come from the childbirth expectation of spouses of primiparas, family income and whether received childbirth education.5. The factors that influence the childbirth expectation of spouses of primiparas come from the childbirth expectation of primiparas and whether received childbirth education.
