The Ligularia sagitta belongs to the genus Ligularia, tribe Senecioneae Cass, family Compositae. It is a perennial herbaceous plant and mainly distributed in Tibet, Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu, Ningxia, Shanxi, Shanxi, Hebei and Inner Mongolia Provinces in China, grow at an altitude of 1270-4000 meters of water, grassland, forest edge, understory and shrub. In China, plants of the genus Ligularia has been used as traditional Chinese herbal medicine and has a variety of medicinal species for the function of cough phlegm, removing blood stasis, emetic, diuresis, cholagogue and removing jaundice, and so on. The root of L. sagitta can be used as medicine to clean heat and detoxify, reduce the swelling. In this thesis, we made phytochemical studies on the whole plant of L. sagitta from Huzhu County, Qinghai Province in China. Consequently, thirty-six compounds were isolated based on various separation techniques, including silica gel column chromatography, MCI chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 chromatography, preparative thin layer chromatography. Thirty-three compounds were elucidated as two eremophilane sesquiterpenes, two eudesmane sesquiterpenes, three guaiane sesquiterpenes, an aromadendrane sesquiterpene, a cedrane sesquiterpene, a bakkane sesquiterpene, two norsesquiterpenes, a labdane diterpene, a oleanane triterpene, three sterols, a cumarin, a lignan, four flavonoids, three phenylpropanoids, two benzene derivatives, a alkaloid, two alkanols, two glycerates, using spectroscopic methods, including 1D and 2D NMR(1H、13C-NMR,DEPT, 1H-1HCOSY,HSQC,HMBC,NOESY), UV, IR, HRESIMS and combination with comparison to the literature data or standard samples. Amomg of them, one eremophilanolide was new compound. This thesis reviewed on the structures and biological activities research situation of the aromadendrane-type sesquiterpene from 1974 to 2016 at home and abroad. The phytochemical study on the whole plant of L. sagitta is expected to provide scientific basis for active ingredients research in Chinese traditional herbal and screening of new medicines. Moreover, the result of this thesis is also expected to provide valuable benefits for developing and utilizing abundant natural plant resources of our country.
