Social address forms is always a difficult problem in teaching Chinese as aforeign language, but little research has been done on the combination of the two.Based on the actual language abilities of foreign students, this paper aims atimproving their cross-cultural communication competence and achieving targetedteaching of social appellations. The paper is divided into five parts. In the first part, according to the need of the paper, it describes the definitionand types of social appellation and introduces the appellations of relationship, rankand occupation appellations, modest appellations, common appellations and fictivekinship terms, which points out the importance of the modern social appellations incross-cultural communication to foreign students. In the second and third parts, a statistical analysis on the use of socialappellations in modern Chinese and the distribution of their types in primarytextbooks for teaching Chinese as a second language is done. Combined with socialappellations included in HSK1-4words, it inspects the repetition rate, speech tagging, and relationship of related culture and acquisition. The fourth part investigates the study and use of social appellations of foreignstudents by means of questionnaires. Thus we can find out the types of foreignstudents’ errors as well as the causes. Based on the combination of statistics andanalysis of the Chinese textbooks and the results of questionnaires. The fifth part puts forward a series of teaching assumptions, including repetitionof modern social appellations, speech tagging, different ways of explaining modernsocial appellations and teaching social appellations in the context in teaching ofChinese as a second language.
