With the deepening of economic globalization and the rising of China’s international status, every move carried out by China has been made an immeasurable effect on the whole world. Especially, the annual press conference held by the Premier during two sessions of the NPC (National People’s Congress) and CPPCC (Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference) has drawn more eyes and focuses from the outside media and journalists. The interpreter in such occasion is undoubtedly equipped with all-round abilities in language grasping, public speaking, logical thinking and knowledge possessing and is expected to have the most excellent interpreting performance either on quantity or on quality. However, according to the research of the press conference interpreting (PCI) from2001to2013hosted by Premier Zhu Rongji, Premier Wen Jiabao and Premier Li Keqiang, the author finds that some slips and even mistakes do exist, which is also the research background and major issue of Gile’s Effort Model.Since most of the PCIs during two sessions are consecutive interpretings, this thesis will be mainly developed from the perspective of Gile’s Effort Model on Consecutive Interpreting (CI) on the basis of the PCI characteristics, and make an analysis of the specific situation for PCI effort distribution. Therefore, it points out the slips or mistakes made by professional interpreters are due to the phenomenon of unbalanced effort distribution during the whole interpreting process. With the materials collected during these13years, this thesis makes an illustration on its underlying causes from both subjective and objective angles. As for subjective aspect, the author mainly focuses on physiological and psychological influences on the interpreter. The former includes long working hours and limited memory capacity. The latter consists of high sensitivity of working atmosphere, personality of the interpreter and different evaluation standards of the parties involved in PCI. While as for objective aspect, it provides four influences from the deep-rooted linguistic characteristics of the speaker, density and unfamiliarity of information, passivity in turn-taking for the interpreter and cultural gaps among different parties. Finally, with the reference of excellent interpreting during the13years of PCI, the author proposes some feasible coping strategies at the linguistic and extra-linguistic level to lessen the total work load and the one for each effort as a modest spur to other forms of PCI.
