During the Romantic Period, the idea of capitalism prevailed. The national consciousness of the musicians in the whole was waken by the impact of the national movement for the emancipation of ideology in the Western Europe. Composers’ pursuit of individuality and the characteristics of their own unique national melody help impel the development of the world’s ethnic music. In the1930s, lots of music forms of national characteristics appeared in varieties of countries. Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky(1840——1893), who was a representative figure in Russia during the Romantic Period in19th century. His works are full of his thinkings of the human nature, society, and nature.Tchaikovsky’s national music has the sorrowful feelings of the Russian people, and he plays an important role to the Russian national music, which has a special significance. In Russian’s sorrowful land, Tchaikovsky followed the step of Rassian national music pioneer, Mikhail Glinka, drew many music pictures on behalf of the Russian national characteristics.The Nutcracker was adapted from a German writer, Hoffman’s The nutcracker and the mouse king, by Tchaikovsky. This work told a story which happen on a Christmas nighter. The heroine of the story, whose name is Clara, received a nutcracker-shaped officer. In her dream, she fight with the officer against the king of the mouse, and they also wondered in the country of candy. The Nutcracker is full of dreams and colour of fairy tale, and it is one of the essential music play in the Western Christmas. Tchaikovsky continued to use the composing methods of the Romantic Period, and at the asme time he also added his own national style into the music, which created quite amazingworks. Mikhail Vasilievich Plernev, who was the famous conductor and pianist in Russian, once adapted seven pieces of music from Tchaikovsky’s works to piano music.Although the structure of the adaptations were relatively short, they still remained thestyle of Tchaikovsky. Mikhail Vasilievich Plerney recreated the plots of the play by u sing the rich language of piano.This essay is composed by three parts. The first one is a brief overview on Tchaikovsky; the second part is the analysis of the adaptations of the suite of piano music The Nutcracker and the discussion of the music style. The last part is the analysis of playing skills, and also to explain the value of existence of teaching of The Nutcracker.This piano suite after adaptation is full of the theatricality, dancing sports, and the feeling of story. The Nutcracker is a collection of a variety of skills. In order to play the work in a perfect way, the requirement of the comprehensive technique is essential, which includes arpeggio exercises, scale of running, jumping to a precise, and the comprehend of the method of touching the key. In addition to rely on the piano broad rage, itis pessary for the players to master the ways of using the special features of the piano,which can help to imitate the details of the orchestral music. The value of Tchaikovsky’s works can not be ignored no matter they are praised or sneered.
