The ancient word often represents a concept by changing the form of another word, changing the component direction is one of the important ways. What have been researched is a common regular which claims that there is no difference between an ancient word and the contrary one, but this regular doesn’t suit for all the ancient words. In order to insure the regular of component direction won’t be abused, we must know the regular is effective for which kind of ancient words. Making sure the regular as the most important premise, we can use it correctly, so as to contribute to research the ancient words’ characters and the regular of words’ changing.The materials of this essay come from “the New Oracle”, “the Inscriptions on Bronze” and “the Warring States Script”, and we find 29 ancient words distinguishing meaning by component direction bases on the regular of it. In addition, we divides them into pros and cons, up and down, normal and inverse, front and side, transverse and upright, and other six kind of them. Through the collection of the materials of those ancient words we find that distinguishing the meaning of words by cons and down are more than others, so we put them as one whole chapter, as well, others like inverse, side, and upright words are less, so we combine them as one chapter. The essay will express them in different ways by classifying them. Then we can get reasons for every kind of words, and this essay will be an organic whole. This essay explains and researches this special kind words by explanation in synchronic and contrast in diachronic.The production of Chinese characters came from the influence of the ancestors’ traditional ideas, as well as observation towards objective things. It is the consequence of coming from pictures and fixed in words. Ancient words express their meaning by different component direction, and it reflects people’s living environment and ideology at that time. Ancient words of different component direction, not only reflect the social culture and psychological, but also influenced by prototype of coinage.
