A Report On The Subtitle Translation Of The Goldbergs

With the development of Film and TV Industry and the spreading of films and TVs of different country, more and more Chinese viewers like to watch foreign films and TV series. However, many of the viewers, with their limited foreign language abilities, are not able to watch the original version, namely Chinese subtitles or dubbing are needed.This report is on the Subtitle translation of the Goldbergs-a family sitcom released by ABC. The TV series includes 23 episodes for a season, length of each episode being 20 minutes, with about 500 lines of dialogue. Our group finished the whole translation program in 23 weeks, each episode a week, for the broadcasting company release one episode a week, and every subtitle of one episode was requested to be finished in 2 hours. It reports the process of the program and case analysis, and talks about strategies of subtitle translation.In this report, the preparations and personnel arrangements, the characters of subtitle and subtitle translation, case analysis are included. In the third part, two points are discussed:The first is to omit redundant parts, such as interjections, padding words, tag questions; and to use simple words and sentence for better understanding, by the way how to have clearer composition is also mentioned, the author tries to analyze it with tree diagram. The second point is strategies and techniques of translating humor, such as creating new puns in target language.
