| Since the Reform and Opening-up Policy, the interactions between China and other countries have gained increasing intensity. China attracts a great many foreign tourists by its long history and unique culture. As the capital of China, Beijing is famous for its splendid history and unique culture. There are totally six scenic spots that have been listed as World Cultural Heritage Sites in Beijing. For example, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, Zhoukoudian Site, the Great Wall and the Ming and Qing Tomb, which are all the optimal scenic spots in China. These scenic spots are the embodiment of traditional Chinese culture and are regarded as the essence of Chinese culture, which arouse more and more foreign tourists` interest. The development of tourism industry cannot be devoid of translation. High quality of scenic spots translation can promote the development of tourism industry, and at the same time strengthen the soft power of our nation.Relevance-adaptation theory is the combination of relevance theory and adaptation theory. Relevance theory describes relevance process from the perspective of cognition in communication, while adaptation theory emphasize on the process of making linguistic choice and adaptation. According to relevance-adaptation theory, translation consists of two processes: discourse-interpreting communicative process and discourse-producing communicative process. In DICP, the translator should first make correct contextual assumption according to the ostentation of the source text, finding out the optimal relevance to the author`s communicative intention and then achieving contextual effect. In DPCP, the translator adapt the optimal relevance to target cognitive environment through four dimensions: contextual adaptation, linguistic adaptation, dynamic adaptation and pragmatic awareness of adaptation, which intended to cater to aesthetic expectation and acceptability level of target readers. Tourism text has informative function and evocative function. Informative function is to provide foreign tourists with important tourism information. So it is the main function of tourism text. Evocative function focuses on aesthetic aspects, which arouses traveling interests of foreign tourists.The thesis employs relevance-adaptation theory as its theoretical basis and adopts Beijing World Cultural Heritage Sites as its investigating material, using descriptive and documentary methodologies, analyzing the translating process of tourism text of Beijing World Cultural Heritage Sites, finding existing problems and providing suitable translation strategies to solve these problems. Then, the thesis draws the conclusion that relevance-adaptation theory is suitable and scientific in the translation of tourism text. This study provides a new investigating perspective to tourism text translation. Hoping that it can make some contributions to tourism translation studies and practices. |
