| College English reading is an important part of English learning. At present, students often read English just because teachers requires students to complete the task, or in order to passes exam such as CET4 or CET6, so their attitude towards English reading is relatively passive and their interest in English reading is generally not high, and reading ability is not proficient. With the wide popularity of smart phones among college students, the students can use wireless mobile communication network technology and wireless mobile communication equipment to obtain education information, education resources and education service. So using smart phone to read English become popular among college students, especially,in English reading. But the key is how to fully apply smart phones to improve college students‘ reading comprehension and arouse college students’ interest in English reading and their attitude towards reading. The author tries to whether the application of smart phones for mobile learning to read English can improve students‘ reading ability in an experiment, proposing the approaches to use smart phone to do English reading and putting forward strategy on evaluation its effect.The author chose randomly 30 non-English major freshmen from the Northwest Normal University as subjects. The experiment lasted eighteen weeks. In the experiment, the pretest, post-test and two questionnaires are given to the subjects. And the students are taught how to use smart phone to reading English and through the analysis of students‘ feedback the author to supervise their reading.Analysis of pretest shows: student’s performance in reading comprehension is not very good(mean=30.17). In the questionnaire before the experiment, it is found that students’ interest in English reading is not high and attitude is not positive and the application of smart phone learning to read English is also not frequently. After the experiment, the students‘ reading performance has improved(mean=38.90>30.17) and their reading ability has a significant change(in T-test p=0.000<0.05).From the questionnaire after the experiment it can be found the college students‘ attitude towards English reading has became positive.Based on the results the author puts forward the following suggestions:(1) teachers should guide students to correctly use smart phones to read English, and teachers need to make a positive and effective management of students,(2) students need good self-restraint and motivation to learn.(3) the promotion of this learning model requires teachers and students‘ corporations, and the support of mobile devices and information technology,(4) mobile learning is a long-established learning habit, so it needs a longer time to develop.The study has its limitation such as difficulty in managing students because of the character of mobile learning. Besides, the sample in the study is small, so the study should pay attention to these limitations in the future and try to improve the approaches in English reading. |
