A Report On The Translation Of The Previous And Present Life Of Liang Sicheng

In the 21 st century, the biographical literature develops very fast, which has both historical and literary features, so the translator should not only focus on its history, but also its literariness in the translation of its biographical texts. The Previous and Present Life of Liang Sicheng tells us about the whole life of Liang Sicheng in detailed and vivid language. As the child of Liang Qichao, who was the representative figure of the modern Chinese reformist, Liang Sicheng was studious and had excellent qualities, especially when he got married with Lin Huiyin, while their experience was so bumpy, so people are fond of talking about the story of the family of Liang. In addition, the educational method of Liang Qichao is very distinctive, almost all of his children made outstanding achievements in the specific field. Till now many network medias and articles carry forward the educational method of Liang Qichao vigorously.One of the authors is Pro.Li Xisuo, the chairman of Liang Qichao Research Association, coupled with a lot of family letters written by Liang Qichao in the book, so I think that the translation of the biography is a huge boost for the publicity of recent China’s history, humanity, education, etc, so it’s very valuable. I choose the extracts of “Bring up His Children Properly” and “Quarrelsome Lovers” as my translation material. Because the whole book belongs to biographical literature, after analyzing the characteristics of the biographical literature, I choose the semantic translation and communicative translation of Peter Newmark to guide my translation.The semantic translation method focuses on pressing close to the meaning of the source language, while the communicative translation method pays much attention to the effect of communication. Meanwhile, in the process of translation, I also use the method of amplification, omission, free translation, changing order, etc. I feel the weakness of my ability to translate and am lack of many historical knowledge, so I will make myself calm down in the translation practice in the future and accumulate knowledge in various aspects to seek for rules and improve my translation level in the essence.This paper mainly includes three parts, including the source Chinese, English translation and the translation report. The translation report is divided into several aspects, that is the description of translation task, the translation process, case analysis and conclusion of the translation practice, among which the case analysis is the focus. Selecting twenty-seven representative examples from the source text carefully, I made the analysis and conclusion, especially after my mentor’s modification, I benefit a lot from the process.
