This report is based on the biography,The World’s Fastest Man: The Extraordinary Life of Cyclist Major Taylor,America’s First Black Sports Hero,Part I(Chapters 5-8),with a total of about 15,000 words,written by Michael Cranage.The book tells the legendary life of Michelle Taylor,the best black cyclist in the 20 th century.Based on Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theory,this report aims to study the application to Chinese translation of the biographical literature.Since the original text is biographical literature,the research subjects of this report are how to vividly translate the title to attract readers,introduce the background of the times to readers,and consider the grammar and stylistic cohesion and coherence with the translation conforming to the expression habits of the target language.Explanations are made to relevant historical background words at the lexical level,and the titles of the text and chapters are rewritten.At the syntactic level,the sentence structure adjustment and conversion is used to make the translation faithful to the original text,which conforms to the habitual use of the target language.At the textual level,cohesion and coherence are emphasized according to the expression habits of the target language,and the style of the original text.This report is divided into five parts.The first chapter is the introduction,which introduces the research background and significance.The second chapter is process of translation.The third chapter is theoretical analysis,which analyzes the study of between semantic translation and communicative translation and the relationship of the theory adopted with the source text.The fourth chapter is the key part of this report.The author analyzes the specific examples in translation practice,from the lexical level,syntactic level,and textual level,and expounds the translation strategies used by the translator to solve the problem.The fifth chapter is the summary part.Through the translation of biographies,the author has accumulated and summarized the translation skills guided by Newmark’s Translation Theory,as well as the problems and limitations encountered,in order to give some enlightenment to the author and others in translating biography text.
