| Documentary is thought to be a powerful form of reality. Its moving audio-visual language and documentary aesthetic style give it the ability to bear a dual mandate in the reproduction and reconstruction. As an important content in the study of film and TV art, the documentary is carrying its function in expression, communication and providing the entertainment, especially its inseparable correlation with the contemporary technology development, make the core concept of documentary, "recording" and "authenticity", the great value in reality attention, while the audience can construct a kind of social, historical and cultural aesthetic ideal by accepting and enjoying the documentary. The documentary’s aesthetic value is one of the documentary creator’s eternal pursuits, although the means of artistic expression is different with feature films, the aesthetic feeling communication and the soul of documentaries always be deeply connected. It is also integrated into the documentary works through the creators’consciousness, taking the creators’attention in the created realistic objects as reference, creating through personal thinking, which is the creator’s aesthetic creation process by subjective consciousness. This aesthetic character needs not only to create beauty and pleasure through the exquisite pictures and montage means, etc. but also to show the thinking in aesthetic value by highlighting the beauty of visual pleasure. The thinking of aesthetic value is not single, but always combined with the philosophical thought of the works.As a typical example of documentary research, Ivens has been telling his understanding of documentary aesthetics and the character of the aesthetic features based on his long journey. This article is studying the characters and works of Ivens then explore the documentary aesthetics from his understanding of the "authenticity* concept, the rationality and function of the fiction, the exploration of documentary’s functional character and the dual character of audio-visual language and so on. This exploration will eventually make our focus back to the relationship between the two soul of the documentary, "authenticity" and "aesthetics". And the creation of Ivens himself also put forward some classical and new problems, such as symbols, the multiple styles documentary might have and an Evans as a phenomenon and so on.
