This paper focuses on a musical form called Guichi Nuo (Nuo Opera), the most completely preserved form of Chinese opera, and explores its function in education as well as its significance in terms of cultural heritage. This paper stands at the apex of musical education, using field work to approach the material. Guichi Nuo scholars were interviewed in order to ascertain the current circumstances of the art, to explore the meaning of traditional culture to modern Chinese people, and to examine the feasibility of fusing local musical education with the regular curriculum. This paper consists of two parts:One:In studying the theory of musical origin, this section will explore the spiritual, moral, and cultural origins of primitive society. This includes an explanation of the term "Living Fossil" as applied to Nuo. Given Nuo’s origins and its detailed record of change, our goal is to find cultural significance in the most primitive situation; and to explore one of ceremonial music’s defining traits:The characteristics of Guichi Nuo. This paper also aims to explore the social and cultural functions of Nuo, by studying its transition from sorcery in the court to folk art. Two:we will scrutinize the educational functions of local materials of cultural inheritance. Both In and outside of China, when choosing educational materials and cultural heritage, both emphasize the local musical culture. Using the process of my field work, I will review the one-sidedness and deficiency of musical textbooks in Guichi, An’hui, and reflect on the status and the educational significance of "Guichi Nuo" in local Chinese textbooks.
