A Practice Report On The Translation Of “Artificial Intelligence In The Network Age”

In the 21 st century, a rapid development has been made in science and technology, especially in the field of computer science. In recent years, due to deepening international exchanges of computer science, requirements for translation in this field are becoming more stringent. However, as computer science is high expertized and full of hard technical terms, translation of computer science is always one of difficulties in the field of translation.This report studies the Chinese-English translation of the article of science and technology “Artificial Intelligence in the Network Age”. This report is divided into four parts:(1) the source, background and significance of the study;(2) analyses and preparations before translation;(3) case analysis; and(4) problems and reflections. The case analysis is the key part of this report. In this part, the functional equivalence theory is adopted to analyze the translation skills and strategies of articles of science and technology from three aspects: lexical treatments, long and complex sentences translation, and the use of passive voice. In lexical treatments, words should be added or deleted according to both the features of English for Science and Technology and the actual context. In terms of long and complex sentences, it should be translated into attributive clauses or clusters of short sentences according to the context and sentence meaning. In the use of passive voice, for example, the Chinese non subject sentences and some Chinese idiomatic expressions are translated into passive sentences. Finally, this report also includes the reflections of the author on the problems and shortcomings of the translation practice.This report makes detailed case analyses and conclusion on the issues in the translation process. It is hoped that this report will be of certain significance for Chinese-English translation of articles of science and technology.
