The Study Of He Zhongying’s Thoughts On The Vernacular Teaching

He Zhongying is a reformer of vernacular teaching at the beginning of the 20th century and has made a contribution in the aspect of Chinese curriculum, textbook writing and teaching practices.He believed that vernacular should be taught as a course in both primary and secondary schools.For primary schools,vernacular words books can be used as textbooks.For secondary schools,vernacular anthologies can be used,especially vernacular novels.Published in 1920,the vernacular textbook for secondary schools-<Bai Hua Wen Fan> was edited by He Zhongying and Hong Beiping,fully embodying his thoughts on Chinese textbook. It pays great attention to the dissemination of new knowledge, new ideas and the articles in it focus on literature,as well as with the reference books.He Zhongying is an erudite and informed linguist,mastering classical Chinese and vernacular. He had experience in teaching and teacher training and was familiar with foreign teaching methods and educational philosophy.So his thoughts on vernacular teaching was based on practice and he fully considered the learning situation and the use of Chinese/which led to his differences from other researchers.For example,he was in favor of both classical Chinese and vernacular, both standard language and dialect as the course content, teaching listening, speaking, reading and writing, etc.He Zhongying’s vernacular teaching concept has great significance on today’s Chinese education. In terms of teaching,his teaching method and thought that teaching should not be constrained by the fixed mode can be used to correct the current template class, problem discussion, etc.In the aspect of textbooks,his thoughts that a large number of modern essays were elected in textbooks and notes of the words and additional materials were written in reference books can also arouse our reflection.What’s more,his principle that theory should be based on practice and his all-embracing concept are worth learning for educators and researchers,as well as his positive enterprising spirit.
