Sport is developing vigorously in the contemporary world. The globalization of sport expands rapidly, intensifying the exchanges of sports culture. As an important tool of the exchanges of sports culture, sports media play a critical role in conveying sports events and expanding the influence of sport. Sports magazines, known for in-depth reporting and delicate production, lead the sports media in terms of professionalism and audience targeting. While the NBA league is one of the most influential sports events, the industry of basketball magazines in the U.S. is also instrumental in guiding the development of their Chinese counterparts. This study analyzes ten issues(164-173) of the Slam magazine published in 2013 by employing various research methods, such as literature review, content analysis, case study, and statistics. Specifically, the analyses focus on the categorization of sections, the editing features, the sources and content of articles, the reporting styles, and the data collection of advertisements and publications. The implications are discussed for the development of Chinese basketball magazines.Founded in 1994, the Slam magazine has been flourishing for more than 20 years. As a pioneer in the industry of basketball magazines, Slam is one of the most popular magazines in the U.S. with a circulation of 150,000 per issue. Known for unique angles and precise news facts, the Slam coverage focuses on basketball, but does not stick to the game itself. Specifically, the magazine covers NBA, WNBA, NCAA, as well as basketball-related music, fashion, culture, and lifestyle. By analyzing the features of Slam management, the author proposes the following conclusions:In terms of the editing, unique section settings and delicate formats; abundant styles of organizing articles and an extensive network of columnists; an extensive coverage of contents and a variety of reporting styles.In terms of orientation, Slam targets at an appropriate audience by setting their interested sections, offering precise information, and upholding localization.In terms of the operation model, multimedia interaction and platform expansion; diversification and globalization of publishing approaches; professionalism of advertisement marketing.This study investigates the features of Slam management and further explores how Chinese basketball magazines could benefit from the experience of the Slam magazine. First, it is of great importance to train professional basketball reporters and improve professionalism among editor. Additionally, Chinese basketball magazines are suggested to target at an appropriate audience, seeking for particular “selling points” and enhancing the branding values. Finally, it is suggested that Chinese basketball magazines should deepen the reforms so as to actively interact with multimedia platforms.
