The present study examined similarities and differences between Taekwondo Pumsae and Taijiquan Taolu in China, which has developed through Oriental history and tradition so has a way of training similar to that of Taekwondo, m order to provide a theoretical ground for the current discussion on the establishment of Taekwondo Pumsae.Particularly this study compared Taegeuk Punisae among different types of popular Taekwondo Pumsae with the simplified 24-form Taijiquan among different types of Taijiquan Taolu focused on the composition of motions. For this purpose, materials were collected using Postefs research method, and collected literatures were analyzed using Bereday’s ’Comparative Research which is known to be the mostappropriate method for inductive comparative research like this study. Conclusions drawn from this study are as follows.1. The basic technical meaning is somewhat different between Taekwondo Pumsae and Taijiquan Taolu but there are similarities in stances, and the similarities and differences are as follows.First, like Taekwondo Pumsae starts and ends with ready stance, showing consistency and cyclicity, Taijiquan Taolu starts with the spirit of ’Taegeuk’, ’Yangeui: ’Sasang " and Talgwe’ and ends in the reverse order, namely, Talgwe’, ’Sasang’, ’Yangeui’ and " Taegeuk.Second, techniques using the fist include straight fist(Pyeongchunggwon), pull-back fist(Pyeongchunggwon)/ body scattered block(Ssanggwangwon: this is defense in Taekwondo but offense in Taijiquan), back fist front strike(Bangwon) and close spear fingers(Gu).Third, stances for smooth connection of motions and movement include horseback riding stance(Mabo), front bent knee stance(Gungbo), crane stance(Dokripbo) and tiger stance(Heobo). In addition, Taijiquan has a peculiar stance called Bubo, which is a very low stance.Fourth, walking means ’methods of moving the legs and the feet’ For example, it is changing from ready stance to front stance or from horseback riding stance to basic stance in Taekwondo Pumsae. That is, it is used when moving or connecting to the next stance. There are ’Sangbo’ that moves forward and Toebo, that moves backward in Taijiquan Taolu, ’Cheukhaengbo’ that stands by pulling the feet close to each other in Taebaek Pumsae, ’Hoenggaebo that stands with crossed feet and ’Pabo’ that pulls the front foot out forward in Sipjia and fixed balance stance in Taekwondo.Fifth, there are kicking techniques such as ax kick or face front kick(Deunggak: pushing kick with the heel), high section front kick(Bungak), twisting kick(Bakgak) and outward kick(Paryeongak).2. This study compared between Taegeuk 4 jang in Taekwondo Taegeuk Pumsae and the simplified 24-form Taijiquan in Taijiquan Taolu, which are similar to each other in the number and anangement of motions.First, the simplified 24-form Taijiquan is composed of a total of 93 motions, which are two kicks(2,2%), 26 strikes(28%)/ 28 blocks(30.1%} and 37 stances(39.8%). Taegeuk 4 Jang is composed of a total of 171 motions, which are 19 kicks(11.1%), 5 strikes(2.9%), 31thrusts(18.1%) 43 blocks(25.1%), 71 stances(41.5%) and 2 other(1.2%).Second, the basic techniques used in the simplified 24-form Taijiquan are only one foot technique and 54 hand techniques, and Taegeuk 4 Jang is composed of 2 foot techniques and 6 hand techniques.Third, the percentages of offending motions and defending ones are 32.1% and 67.9% respectively in Taegeuk Punisae, and 48.1% and 51.9% respectively in Taolu. The difference comes from the fact that, while Taegeuk Pumsae simply repeats a defending motion and an offending motion, Taolu makes a motion tha defends and offends or offends and defends at the same time.Fourth, Taegeuk Pumsae is composed of straight forcible motions, the breath is short, and height of stances is uniform. However, Taijiquan Taolu is composed of smooth rounding motions, the breath is long and the height of stance varies.3. What both Taekwondo and Taijiquan pursue are health, self-defense and strong body. Although they are different as one is soft inside and tough outside and the other tough inside and soft outside, they share the same context with each other. In training Taekwondo, however, existing Pumsae is considered insufficient to stimulate trainees’ interest and motivate them to be drilled. In addition, the technical superiority of Taekwondo to other martial arts lies in its diverse types of kicks. Thus, Taekwondo Pumsae should be reformed to include strong and straight motions and highly technical kicks as well as spiritual elements and breathing for various Taekwondo Pumsae competitions. In addition, not just for physical and mental training and for matching, Taekwondo Pumsae should be established for health promotion and physical strength so that it may be helpful to all people, young and old, men and women of course including Taekwondo players.
