Cynara scolymus L.called artichoke thistle,artichoke ball,artichokes,French lily,is native to Europe of the Mediterranean,as the ancient edible plant.Artichokes was first transplanted in China during the 1990 s from Italy which today is widely cultivated all over the world.Artichokes mainly containing polyphenol,flavonoids,sesquiterpenoides,lignans.Artichokes has antioxidant,protecting liver,lowering blood lipid,improving gastrointestinal function,which also protect the cardiovascular physiological activity in Europe.Artichoke has been used for the treatment of dyspepsia.In recent years scholars gradually concentrate in the study of organic phenolic compounds.Objectives: To extract active ingredients from the artichoke roots.Then isolate and purify the total extract effective system,and identify the compounds.Finally explore the antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity of phenolic compounds.Methods: The artichokes roots were extracted by EtOH.Then Silicagel,Sephadex LH-20,ODS,TLC and HPLC were used to isolate the artichokes roots extraction.And confirm their structures by ESI-MS,1H-NMR and 13C-NMR.Also study their antioxidant and protecting liver actives.Results: Seventeen compounds were isolated from the artichokes roots.They are myristic acid(1),ethyl caffeate(2),vanillic acid(3),5-methoxyfurfural(4),protocatechuic aldehyde(5),5-O-caffeoyl quinic acid methyl ester(6),quercetin(7),luteolin(8),luteolin-7-O-?-D-glucoside(9),?-sitosterol(10),stigmasterol(11),daucosterol(12),gallic acid(13),apigenin(14),cynarine(15),cynarine methyl ester(16),3,5-di-caffeoylquinic acid methyl ester(17).Conclusion: Seventeen compounds were isolated from the artichokes roots.Compounds3,4,5 were isolated from Cynara Linn.for the first time and compounds 2,6,16,17 were isolated from Cynara Scolymus for the first time.And15,16 have great antioxidant and protecting liver actives.
