Objective1、To learn the poor eyesight condition and the secular changes of low-vision among primary and secondary students aged 6-17 years in Suzhou industrial park from 2010-2014;2、To analyze the distributions of sex, source of students and age characteristics of the eyesight condition among the students in SIP aged 6-17,and to establish a bivariate correlation analysis of height,BMI and eyesight;3 、 To study occurrence and development of poor vision, provide scientific basis of effective evidence for clinical diagnosis and school health work. Methods:Using stratified cluster sampling, physical examination data were collected from the primary and middle school students in Suzhou Industrial Park from 2010 to 2014;after excluding the ineligible subjects due to incomplete, lost or missing data,an Excel visual acuity test database was established by data aggregation and conversion.A total of 178602 valid subjects were identified.General statistical description(by frequency, rate or percent)and chi-square test were used to describe the distribution of impaired vision and its severity across different populations, regions and periods;F test was used to compare the effects of height(cm)and BMI(kg/m2)on the severity of impaired vision;multivariate binary logistic regression was used to analyze the effects of various factors on impaired vision.Results:1.From 2010 to 2014,the overall incidence of impaired vision among the middle and primary school students in Suzhou Industrial Park remained stable with slight decreases, and the incidence of moderate to severely impaired vision was lower than the national average.2.The incidence of impaired vision was higher in females students than in male students and higher in urban areas than in rural areas, and increased with age;the majority of the cases of impaired vision were of severe severity, followed by moderate and mild severity;the dynamic pattern presented gradually narrowing margins between females and males students and between urban and rural areas;the incidence of impaired vision increased on a yearly basis among 6-8-year olds, and the extent of increase was the greatest among 12-14-year olds, indicating a trend towards lowering age affected by impaired vision.3.The severity of impaired vision presented a positive correlation with height, which however was only significant in puberty and became insignificant after 15 years old.4.There was also a positive correlation between severity of impaired vision and BMI,which however indicated no statistically significant difference. Conclusions and Suggestions1.In recent years, great achievements have been made in the management of common diseases among the students in Suzhou Industrial Park. From 2010 to 2014,visual acuity remained stable with slight improvement among primary and middle school students in the park;in particular the incidence of moderate to severe impaired vision was far lower than the national average, which largely attributes to the local health and education authorities’ emphasis on the prevention of myopia.2.The distribution of impaired vision and its severity among the 6-7-year-old students in Suzhou Industrial Park was consistent with other domestic reports;in generally the incidence was higher in female students than in male students and higher in urban areas than in rural areas, and the incidence and severity of impaired vision increased with age.3.The severity of impaired vision was positively correlated with height and BMI,which was more significant during puberty(6-14 years old). This was primarily due to the fact that the students were in growth spurt where the optic axis would increase with increasing height, while the refractive status is negatively correlated with the axial length;excessive nutrition would also have direct impacts the development of eyes and vision.4.The management of impaired vision requires long-term,arduous efforts. It has been confirmed in studies that the earlier myopia management is introduced, the better the results would be,and myopia management should be continued throughout the school years. Therefore the education authorities should,on the one hand, further emphasize myopia management among students, develop the corresponding mechanisms and policies;on the other hand, the schools should actively promote publication and education on vision care.In addition, parents should also strengthen education and supervision on children’s eye health, which are essential for containing the constantly rising incidence of myopia and reversing the trend towards affecting lower ages.
